South Carolina: Pro-Gun Legislation Needs Your Help to Advance in Columbia!

Several bills which seek to make dramatic improvements to our Right to Keep and Bear Arms are currently pending in the state Senate, including H 3025, H 3799 and H 4703Please contact members of the Senate Judiciary Committee and urge them to SUPPORT these critical pro-gun bills.  Please click the “Take Action” button below to contact the committee members in support of these bills!

Last year, H 3025 was introduced by state Representative Alan Clemmons (R-107) with the intention of passing a true Right to Carry recognition bill, which would ensure that South Carolina recognized ALL valid Right to Carry permits issued by other states.  After facing opposition from both the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and the South Carolina Sheriff’s Association (SCSA), H 3025 was amended to become a Permitless Carry bill, which would allow any law-abiding citizen who may lawfully possess a handgun to carry a handgun for personal protection, without the need to first acquire a permit.  This bill passed with a strong, bipartisan majority.

Further, the House of Representatives also passed H 3799 during the 2015 session.  Introduced by state Representative Bill Hixon (R-83), H 3799 would expand recognition of Right to Carry permits, but only to the state of Georgia.

Both bills were carried over to the 2016 session and are now awaiting action in the Senate.  Please click the “Take Action” button above to contact members of the South Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee and urge them to work with NRA to pass legislation that will strongly advance the rights of law-abiding citizens who choose to carry firearms for personal protection.

H 3025 and H 3799 are both very viable, and at a minimum, the Senate Judiciary Committee should work to ensure South Carolina recognizes valid Right to Carry permits issued by all other states.

Please also contact your Sheriff and urge them to support NRA’s efforts.  Encourage your Sheriff to contact the SCSA, which claims to represent them, and demand that the group remove its opposition to expanding Right to Carry reciprocity.

Recently, the House passed H 4703, which is also now in the hands of the Senate.  As previously reported, this legislation, introduced by House Judiciary Chairman Greg Delleney (R-43) and strongly supported by NRA, seeks to clarify the Protection of Persons and Property Act (South Carolina’s “Castle Doctrine”) to ensure that a defendant who is denied protection from prosecution under this Act is able to immediately appeal such a denial.  H 4703 passed the House with no votes in opposition.  Please click the “Take Action” button to encourage members of the Senate Judiciary Committee to pass this critical self-defense legislation.

Please continue to check your email inbox and www.nraila.org for updates on these critical bills as they advance through the South Carolina General Assembly.
