Several bills proposed during the 2013 session of the General Assembly that would have required background checks for the private sale or transactions of firearms in Virginia, including those at gun shows, were defeated. Existing law requires only federally licensed dealers to conduct background checks.
In the current session, additional measures that would have tightened the state's gun laws were defeated in a House Militia, Police and Public Safety subcommittee Thursday.
Among them was a proposal that would have prohibited the sale and transfer of high-capacity magazines.
