Three Pro-Gun Bills Waiting to be Heard in the Kentucky Senate

Friday, February 25, 2011

Please contact your state Senator today!

Three important Second Amendment-related bills have passed in the Kentucky House of Representatives and are awaiting consideration by the state Senate.  NRA-backed House Bill 1 is a Right to Hunt and Fish Amendment, House Bill 308 would provide a pathway to restoring gun rights, and House Bill 313 would allow for concealed carry in a vehicle’s installed compartment.  Your help is needed to make sure these critical bills do not get delayed or fall victim to partisan politics.

Sponsored by state Representative Leslie Combs (D-94) and House Speaker Greg Stumbo (D-95), House Bill 1 proposes an amendment to the Kentucky Constitution recognizing citizens’ right to hunt and fish.  It would provide truly meaningful protections against the animal rights activists who seek to ban all hunting in America.  The ultimate adoption of this constitutional amendment would preserve Kentucky’s rich hunting and fishing traditions for future generations.  This bill is expected to be heard by the Senate State and Local Government Committee at any time.

House Bill 308, introduced by state Representative Bob Damron (D-39), would implement the federal NICS Improvements Amendments Act, providing a pathway for the restoration of gun rights.  This bill is expected to be heard by the Senate Judiciary at any time.

On Friday, February 25, House Bill 313 passed in the state House by a vote of 90 to 3.  Sponsored by state Representative Will Coursey (D-6), HB 313 would allow an individual to carry a loaded or unloaded firearm in an enclosed compartment originally installed by the manufacturer in a motor vehicle.  The firearm would not be considered a concealed firearm under state law and the occupant would not need a concealed carry permit to transport a firearm in this manner.  Current law requires a firearm to be stored in a glove compartment even though some vehicles do not come with one regularly installed.

Please contact your state Senator TODAY and respectfully ask him or her to bring up and support HB 1 without anti-hunting amendments, HB 308, and HB 313 prior to adjournment.  Contact information can be found here
