APPEARS IN Legal & Legislation

California Legislative Alert

Monday, May 20, 2002

Your help is needed immediately to STOP two legislative bills of serious threat to the lawful manufacturers and sellers of firearms and ammunition. Senate Bill 682 and Assembly Bill 496 were introduced in this legislative session as a result of last year`s California State Supreme Court dismissal of a lawsuit against a firearms manufacturer (Merrill v. Navegar). This lawsuit dismissal was, of course, a just victory for the firearms industry and therefore infuriated the anti-gun crowd.

Their response is SB 682 and AB 496, bills that will strip the firearms manufacturers of current protection in state law granting them limited statutory immunity from being sued. This limited immunity has been on the books since 1983 and was passed originally to halt greedy trial lawyers in their tracks who want nothing more than to pad their bank accounts while putting this nation`s lawful firearm manufacturers out of business. Their allies in this fight are the usual anti-gun suspects, including Handgun Control and the Million Mom March. One way or another, they want nothing more than the complete and total destruction of our firearms heritage and see SB 682 and AB 496 as yet one more way to achieve their goal.

These bills have been approved by each chamber`s Judiciary Committee and now are on the fast track to be voted on by the full Senate and Assembly soon.

Don`t Let the Anti-Gun Crowd Get Their Way
Here`s What You Need To Do
Voice your opposition to Senate Bill 682 and Assembly Bill 496 NOW. Call your Senator and your Assemblymember and urge them each to vote NO on yet another back door attack on a lawful industry.
