Colorado Senate Foils Right To Carry Bill

Thursday, May 9, 2002

On Tuesday, May 7 the Colorado Senate defeated HB 1410, sponsored by Rep. Lois Tochtrop (D-34) and Sen. Ken Chlouber (R-4). The bill, which would have established a "Shall-Issue" Right to Carry permit system, made it all the way through the House of Representatives and the Senate Agriculture Committee before being derailed by five members of the Appropriations Committee. Your NRA-ILA made efforts to revive the bill in the House, but time ran out when the legislative session officially ended on Wednesday.

Thanks to your efforts and unprecedented support from politicians on both sides of the aisle, HB 1410 almost became law. But despite your phone calls and letters, five members of the Appropriations Committee decided to substitute their own judgment for that of the other 31 Senators (not to mention the House of Representatives).

Here`s how the Appropriations Committee members voted:

Voting in Favor of Right Carry                                        Voting Against Your Right to Self-Defense

Senator Alice Nichol (D-5): 303-866-4863                         Senator Penfield Tate (D-3): 303-866-4864

Senator Ken Chlouber (R-4): 303-866-4869                     Senator Rob Hernandez (D-26): 303-866-4862

Senator Doug Lamborn (R-32): 303-866-4835                 Senator Doug Linkhart (D-18): 303-866-4861

Senator Dave Owen (R-24): 303-866-2586                      Senator Peggy Reeves (D-13): 303-866-4841

Senator Ron Teck (R-12): 303-866-3077                          Senator Terry Phillips (D-29): 303-866-5291

Please contact Senator Chlouber and Representative Tochtrop to thank them for their active support. You can use the "Write Your Reps" box at right to contact them and to find out who your individual Senator is and contact them via e-mail. Thank your Senator if they stood with you and protected your rights. If your Senator is on the Appropriations Committe and voted against Right to Carry, ask them why. Let him or her know where you stand.
